Resume for Consulting: The Format Firms Screen for
A consulting resume is one page, and every bullet ends in a "so what": the action, the number, and the decision it produced. The resume is read as a sample of how you structure a problem, which is why an unquantified bullet costs you more here than anywhere else. Keyword table, two full examples and a blank template below.

What a consulting resume has to prove
That you could take a workstream on a case team and come back with an answer. That is the question behind every consulting screen, and the resume is the first evidence of it.
An engagement runs a partner at the top, an engagement manager running the day to day, and a small group of analysts or associates each owning a piece of the problem. Your resume is read against that structure. A screener is not asking whether you worked hard. They are asking whether you can take something ambiguous, break it down, and produce a defensible answer that changes what the client does.
This is also why consulting resumes are so uniform. The one-page, education-experience-leadership-additional format is nearly standard across firms, so the format is not where you differentiate. The bullets are.
What consulting screeners look for
Large firms use applicant tracking systems and often a first-pass human read of well under a minute per resume. These are the things being counted.
| Signal | Why they screen for it | Where to show it |
|---|---|---|
| Quantified impact in every bullet | The first thing a screener counts. Unquantified bullets read as unverified claims | Every bullet carries a number: dollars, percent, hours, headcount, SKUs, accounts |
| "So what" consequence | Consulting is paid for implications, so a resume without them misses the point of the job | The last clause of each bullet: the decision or change your work produced |
| Structured problem solving | The core screen. Firms want evidence you can break an ambiguous problem down | Show it in a bullet where you scoped the problem yourself, do not claim it as a skill |
| Leadership with accountability | Separates involvement from responsibility, and it is what the fit interview digs into | Leadership section with the role, the team size and what you were on the hook for |
| Excel modeling and analytics (SQL, Python, Tableau) | Analyst work is the day job for the first years, and firms screen for the toolset | Additional section, plus at least one bullet where a model did the work |
| Client or stakeholder facing work | Consulting is a client-facing job from week one and firms look for prior exposure | A bullet naming who you presented to and what they decided |
| Case competitions and consulting clubs | Genuine signal for students, and the most common route in without prior experience | Leadership section with the competition, your placing and the problem |
| Academic record (GPA, test scores) | Still used as a filter at several firms, though requirements vary by firm and year | Education block, if strong and if the firm's current application page asks for it |
| Specific, genuine interests | Used as a fit-interview opener, so it is real screening surface and not decoration | Additional section. Two or three specific ones, never "travel and reading" |

EXPERIENCE
Kestrel Medical Devices, Boston, MA | Operations Manager | Mar 2023 to present
Scoped and led a supply review across 3 plants after a delivery miss, isolating a single supplier lead time as the constraint, which led the executive team to dual-source that component before the next quarter
Built the capacity model in Excel across 40 SKUs and 6 lines, which changed the 2026 production plan and removed the overtime the plant had been running to cover a scheduling error
Ran a team of 9 through a warehouse consolidation, presenting the options to the VP of Operations and running the option the leadership team chose
Kestrel Medical Devices, Boston, MA | Senior Analyst | Jun 2021 to Mar 2023
Rebuilt the cost-to-serve analysis in SQL and Tableau across 200 accounts, showing that a group of small accounts was unprofitable at current terms and prompting a renegotiation
Automated the weekly operations report, saving roughly 8 analyst hours a week and giving the plant leads the numbers on Monday rather than Wednesday
Presented monthly performance to plant leadership as the sole analyst on the account
EDUCATION
Ashwood University, Boston, MA | BS Industrial Engineering | 2021
Consulting Club, VP of Casework, ran the case workshop for 60 members
LEADERSHIP AND ACTIVITIES
Riverside Food Bank | Volunteer Logistics Lead | 2022 to present
Redesigned the weekly routing for 4 vans, which cut the Saturday distribution from 6 hours to about 4 and freed a volunteer shift
ADDITIONAL
Skills: Excel modeling, SQL, Tableau, PowerPoint, Python (pandas)
Languages: French (professional working proficiency), Igbo (conversational)
Interests: Distance running (two marathons), competitive chess, restoring vintage bicycles

Consulting resume example: entry level
For an undergraduate applying to a consulting analyst program with no consulting experience, which is the normal case. Education leads.

Interviewed 11 branch managers to test the assumptions in the data before writing the recommendation
Fernwood Small Business Clinic, Ann Arbor, MI | Student Consultant | Jan 2025 to May 2025

The "so what" bullet (the part applicants get wrong)
Action, method, number, consequence. Four parts, one sentence. Most bullets on most consulting applications carry two of them.
- Task. "Built a pricing model in Excel." True, and it tells a screener nothing they cannot assume.
- Quantified task. "Built a pricing model in Excel covering 40 SKUs across 6 product lines." Better, and still stops before the point.
- So what. "Built a pricing model across 40 SKUs that identified a mispriced tier and led the team to reprice it before the quarter closed." This is the one that gets read twice.
The consequence is the part that proves you understand what the work was for, and it is the same instinct the case interview tests. Three bullets per role in this shape beats six bullets of activity, because a screener spending well under a minute on your page is looking for a pattern rather than a complete history.
Two warnings. Never round a number to make it read better, since the fit interview will walk through the exact bullet and ask how you got there. And do not claim credit for a team outcome as though it were yours alone, because the follow-up question is always what you personally did. If you need help pulling the impact out of your existing bullets, the STAR method examples use the same structure, and resume summary examples cover the opening line for the non-consulting versions of your resume.
Build yours
- Step 1, find the consequence in every bullet before you write. For each thing you did, write down what somebody decided or changed because of it. Any bullet where you cannot name a consequence is a bullet that should probably be cut.
- Step 2, check the firm's own current requirements. Firms differ on GPA, test scores and cover letters, and they change it between cycles, so read the specific application page rather than a template from two years ago.
- Step 3, lay it out in the builder. One page, single column, no tables or text boxes, which is what parses cleanly in the enterprise ATS large firms run. The AI resume builder drafts the impact bullets from your title and your numbers so you are editing rather than starting blank. No signup needed.
- Step 4, prepare to defend the page. The fit interview is largely your resume read back to you, line by line. If a bullet is on there, you should be able to talk for two minutes about how you got the number.
Applying to consulting and industry roles in the same week? Run each version through the free ATS match check against its posting, in about 30 seconds and at no cost, so the consulting page and the industry page each carry the right vocabulary.
