Resume for Finance Roles: FP&A, Corporate and Banking

Say which finance you do in the first line, then prove what you owned rather than what you assisted with. FP&A, corporate finance and investment banking read for different things, and a page that hedges between all three gets passed over by all three. Checklist, two examples and a blank template below.

Which finance are you applying to

Three different jobs share the word finance, and each reads a resume differently. Pick the one you are applying to and write for it.

FunctionWhat the page has to proveNumbers that carry weight
FP&AYou own a planning cycle and the business partners trust your numbersBudget or forecast size, forecast variance, headcount and spend modeled, cycle time
Corporate financeYou size decisions: capital, investment cases, pricing, treasuryCapital deployed, return analysis, working capital freed, financing cost
Investment bankingYou have transaction reps and you can build under deadlineDeal count and size band, stage reached, models built (DCF, LBO, comps)

The common failure across all three is the word "assisted". "Assisted with the monthly forecast" describes proximity to work rather than work. Replace it with what you owned, even if it was small: one model, one region, one recurring pack. Owning a small thing beats assisting with a large one.

If your day is the close, reconciliations, AP and AR, or audit, that is accounting rather than analysis and the accountant resume guide fits better.

The finance resume checklist

Read the last column against the resume you have open right now.

SectionWhat goes in itYours is wrong if
Function namedFP&A, corporate finance, banking or treasury, named in the summaryIt says "finance professional", so the reader cannot tell which desk you belong on
OwnershipThe plan, forecast, P&L, model or deal pipeline you owned, and its sizeEvery bullet starts with "assisted with" or "supported"
ImpactForecast variance, cost identified, deal value, days cut from a cycleYou described the process and never what it changed

StakeholdersWho you presented to by level, and how oftenThe reader cannot tell if you have been in front of a CFO or only a spreadsheet

Excel, modeling and credentials, written so they survive the test

Name the structures, not a self-assessed level. "Advanced Excel" appears on almost every finance resume, which is why it carries no information. Only list what you can do live, because a modeling test is a normal part of finance interviews.

  • Model types you have built. Three-statement, DCF with sensitivity and scenario tables, LBO, comparable company analysis, rolling forecast, unit economics.
  • Functions. INDEX MATCH, XLOOKUP, SUMIFS, pivot tables, Power Query, data tables, dynamic arrays. VBA only if you maintain macros.
  • Adjacent tooling. SQL if you write queries, Power BI or Tableau if you build the dashboards rather than only reading them, Python only if it survives a follow-up question.

Certification wording is its own credibility test, and finance readers apply it.

  • Passed a level: "CFA Level I passed, February 2026". Include the month.
  • Sitting a level: "CFA Level II candidate, exam scheduled May 2027". Candidate is the correct word before you pass.
  • Charterholder: only write "CFA" after your name once the charter is awarded, which requires qualifying work experience as well as the exams.
  • Other credentials: CPA with the licensing state, FMVA, CAIA level, Series 7 and 63 with dates.
  • Placement: near the top early in your career, further down once ownership lines outweigh it.

Build yours

  1. Step 1, list what you owned, not what you touched. For each role: the process, model or budget that was yours, its size, and what changed because you ran it.
  2. Step 2, band anything confidential. Scale bands, percentages and variance rather than absolute figures.
  3. Step 3, lay it out in the builder. It handles the single-column, ATS-safe formatting and exports a clean PDF in about five minutes, and the AI resume builder drafts the ownership bullets from your title and your numbers. No signup needed.
  4. Step 4, be ready to open the model. Every technical line is fair game in the interview. Cut anything you would not want to demonstrate.
