Resume for Nanny Jobs: What Families Actually Read

Your employer is a parent, not a company, so a nanny resume is read for the ages you have cared for, your CPR certification, whether you drive, and who will vouch for you. Job titles matter far less than specifics. Checklist, two examples and a blank template below.

Your employer is a family, and that changes the page

A parent is not screening for a skill set, they are deciding whether to leave their children with you. Trust is built out of specifics.

So the things a normal resume treats as background become the headline: which ages you have handled, whether you were alone with the children, your CPR card and its expiry, whether you drive, and how many families will pick up the phone about you.

The other difference is scope. Say what you did: the children's meals and laundry, yes, the family's grocery shop, only if that was part of it. Most bad matches come from an unclear boundary rather than a bad nanny.

Returning to work after raising your own children? The stay-at-home mom resume guide covers how to frame the gap.

The nanny resume checklist

Read the last column against the resume you have open right now.

SectionWhat goes in itYours is wrong if
Ages cared forThe children's ages in every role, at the time, and how long you were thereIt says "cared for children", so a parent cannot tell if you have done newborns
ScheduleHours per week, live-in or live-out, sole charge or a parent at homeThe family cannot tell whether you have run a full day alone
CPR and first aidInfant and child CPR with pediatric first aid, issuing body and expiryThe card is adult-only, undated, or missing
Daily careBottles, naps, potty training, bath and bedtime, activities by ageYou wrote "provided care" instead of the routine you ran
DrivingLicense, years driving, own car or family car, record, car seatsA role built on school runs cannot tell whether you drive
Household scopeChildren's meals and laundry, tidying their spaces, activity logisticsThe boundary is unclear, so the family assumes the wrong scope
ReferencesTwo or three families willing to take a call, as "available on request"Family names and numbers are printed on the resume itself

References, the part nanny hiring takes seriously

Expect every reference to be called, and expect real questions. Office hiring often skips references. Nanny hiring does not, because a parent has no other way to check the thing they care about.

  • Two or three families, by phone. Email references carry much less weight here. Ask permission first and tell them what the new role is.
  • Keep names off the resume. Send the details when asked, in one sheet with names, the ages of their children, your dates and the best time to call.
  • Cover the gaps. If a placement ended badly, say what happened before the family hears a version of it on a call. Families relocate, budgets change, children start school, and none of that counts against you.

Build yours

  1. Step 1, write down the ages and dates first. For every family: the children's ages when you started and left, your hours, and whether you were alone with them.
  2. Step 2, check your CPR card. If it is expired or adult-only, book the infant and child course before you send anything.
  3. Step 3, lay it out in the builder. It handles the single-column formatting and exports a clean PDF in about five minutes, and the AI resume builder drafts the daily-care lines from your notes. No signup needed.
  4. Step 4, line up your references before you apply. Message the families, get a yes, and put their details on a separate sheet.
