Resume for Security Guard and Security Officer Jobs

A security officer resume gets screened on the license block first, so put your state guard license number, expiry and armed or unarmed status above everything else. Then prove the post: what you screened, what you patrolled, what you reported. Checklist, two examples and a blank template below.

What a security officer resume has to prove

That you are licensed, that you can be trusted alone on a post, and that you write down what happens.

Most security resumes fail on the same sentence: "monitored premises and ensured safety of personnel". Every applicant monitored premises. The reader is a contract security account manager filling a specific post for a specific client, and what they need is which sites you have covered, how busy the post was, and whether your reports were any good.

Licensing, armed status and certifications

Guard licensing is set by the state, not nationally, so the name of the card, the training hours and the renewal cycle all differ depending on where you work. Some states register guards through a licensing board, some through the state police, a few leave it to the city. Check your own state agency rather than a number you read online. What goes on the resume is the same everywhere:

  • The license title as your state names it, not "security license".
  • The number. It lets a recruiter verify you in a minute instead of calling to ask.
  • The issuing agency and the expiry month and year. An undated card reads as expired.
  • Armed or unarmed. If armed, add the permit, the qualification date and the weapon type. Licenses in more than one state all go on, because multi-state coverage wins regional contracts.
  • Pending or in training? Say so with the expected date. Plenty of employers hire while an application processes.

After the license, CPR, AED and first aid carry the most weight, since many client sites require a certified responder on shift. Then the site cards you hold: fire safety director, TWIC, OSHA 10, and a driver's license class if the post includes a patrol vehicle.
