Resume for Attorneys: The Format Legal Hiring Expects

An attorney resume leads with bar admissions and education, describes matters by type and posture rather than by client, and stays visually conservative: single column, black text, no photo. Below: the checklist, two filled-in examples and a blank template.

Single-column, ATS-safe templates. Classic is the safest choice for legal hiring.

What an attorney resume has to prove

That you are admitted where they need you, trained where it counts, and already doing the work at the level they are hiring for. Those three things are read in that order, usually in under a minute.

That is why bar admissions sit at the top rather than in a credentials footnote. A hiring partner filling a role in a specific jurisdiction filters on admission before reading a single bullet, and an admission line without a year forces them to guess at your seniority.

Format is the other half. Legal hiring is conservative, and a resume with color blocks, a two-column layout or a headshot reads as someone who has not worked in the field. There is no reward for standing out on design here.

The attorney resume checklist

Six things. Read the last column against the resume you have open right now.

SectionWhat goes in itYours is wrong if
Bar admissionsEach jurisdiction with the year admitted, plus federal courts and any pending applicationAdmissions are at the bottom, or there is no year against them
EducationLaw school and year, real honors only, journal with your position, clinic or moot courtYou claimed honors loosely or left the journal position off
Practice areasNamed the way the field names them, in the first line of each roleThe reader has to guess whether you do litigation or transactional work
MattersType, posture and your role, with nothing that identifies a clientIt lists duties like "drafted documents" and never a matter type
ClerkshipThe Hon. judge, the court and the term years, on its own lineA clerkship is hidden inside a list of jobs

Writing matters and practice areas (the part people get wrong)

Lead each role with the practice areas, then describe matters by type, posture and your role. The reader is deciding whether you can do their work, and duty language does not answer that.

  • Name the practice area in the field's own words. "Commercial litigation, trade secret and restrictive covenant matters" places you instantly. "Handled various legal matters" places you nowhere.
  • Give the posture and your role. Second chair at trial, argued a motion, ran discovery, led diligence on a mid-market acquisition, took a deal from term sheet to closing. Posture is how seniority is read.
  • Protect the client. Describe the matter type without anything that identifies who it was, unless the matter is genuinely public. Confidentiality does not pause because you are job hunting.
  • Keep the deal sheet separate. If a firm asks for representative matters, that is its own document. Do not grow the resume to hold it.
  • Going in-house. Add the business context: which function you advised, contract volume and type, and the risk decisions you owned.

Moving out of practice entirely? The career change resume guide covers how to lead with transferable work instead of practice areas.

Build yours

  1. Step 1, confirm your admissions, then list your matters. Every jurisdiction with the year, federal court admissions, and the honest status of anything pending, checked against the relevant state bar or board of law examiners. Then matters by type, posture, your role, and how many you carried at once.
  2. Step 2, match the posting. Practice-area vocabulary is what legal ATS filters on. Paste your draft and the posting into the free ATS match check to see which terms are missing, in about 30 seconds and at no cost.
  3. Step 3, lay it out in the builder. Choose the Classic template, which is the plain single-column layout legal hiring expects, and export a clean PDF in about five minutes. No signup needed.
