Resume for Dental Assistant: Credentials, Chairside Skills, Template

A dental assistant resume is read credentials first: what you hold, in which state, and when it expires. Radiography and expanded function rules are set state by state, so the page has to be specific. Below: a checklist, two examples and a blank template.

What a dental assistant resume has to prove

That you can be useful at the chair on day one, legally and practically. Two questions decide the interview, and both belong in the top third of the page.

What are you permitted to do? Whether an assistant can take radiographs, place sealants, polish coronally or monitor nitrous is decided by the state, not the practice, and the titles differ too. An office manager who cannot work that out in a few seconds moves to the next resume.

What pace are you used to? A single-provider practice and a six-chair group office are different jobs. Providers supported, patients a day and practice type answer that, and almost no resume says.

Credentials, and why the state matters (the part people get wrong)

There is no single national rule for what a dental assistant may do. Titles, radiography permissions and expanded functions are set by each state dental board, and the CDA is set by the Dental Assisting National Board. Both change, so write what you actually hold.

  • Entry route. Some states allow on-the-job trained assistants at the chair, some require a state credential or registration first. Say which applies to you and name the state.
  • Radiography. The permission most postings care about, and it is state specific. Name the credential as your state issues it, with the year, then list the equipment underneath.
  • Expanded functions. Coronal polishing, sealants, temporary placement and nitrous monitoring are permitted differently in different states, and some use a separate title such as EFDA or EDDA. List only what you are credentialed for.
  • National certification. Hold the CDA? Put it after your name and in the certifications block with the year. Working toward it? Say so and name what you have completed. Check danb.org for current requirements before describing them on paper.
  • Moving states. One line saying which credential you hold now and that you are applying for the destination state's equivalent.

Considering clinic work too? The medical assistant resume guide covers the CMA and RMA side, and the CNA resume guide the nursing assistant route.

Build yours

  1. Step 1, gather your credential dates and your numbers. Credential number and renewal date, DANB certification year, radiography credential, BLS expiry. Then providers supported, patients a day, practice type, and what you own in the office.
  2. Step 2, match the posting. Paste your draft and the posting into the free ATS match check to see which of its terms are missing, in about 30 seconds and at no cost.
  3. Step 3, lay it out in the builder. Single-column, ATS-safe formatting exported as a clean PDF in about five minutes, and the AI resume builder drafts bullets from your numbers. No signup needed.
