Resume for Graphic Designer: The Format Creative Directors Expect

Your portfolio shows the design. Your resume just has to get read, which means one column, no sidebars, and a live portfolio link at the top. The two-column designed resume is the most common reason a strong designer never reaches the creative director. This page gives you the keyword table, two full examples and a blank template.

What a designer resume has to prove

That the portfolio is worth opening. That is the whole job. Nobody hires a graphic designer off a resume, and nobody opens the portfolio if the resume never parses.

This is the trap the role is famous for. Designers design their resume, because designing things is what they do. Then the two-column layout, the icon skill bars and the name set in an image go through an applicant tracking system and come out as a scrambled block of text, or as almost nothing at all. The creative director you designed it for never sees the file.

So the resume is deliberately plain, single column, real text, with the portfolio URL in the contact line and clickable. The taste lives one click away, where a human is actually looking at it.

What design hiring managers and ATS scan for

Agencies and in-house brand teams both filter on tooling and discipline before a human reviews. Mirror the posting's exact tool names, then prove each one in the body.

Skill or termWhy they scan for itWhere to put it
Portfolio URLThe first thing a design hiring manager looks for, and a missing or dead link ends the reviewContact line, written out in full and hyperlinked in the exported PDF
Adobe apps named individually (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign)Filters match the exact app name, not "Creative Suite"Tools block, split into Adobe and product tools
FigmaThe default for product, web and most collaborative design work nowTools block, plus a bullet where you worked in a shared file with engineers
After Effects or motionIncreasingly requested on brand and social roles, and it separates applicantsTools block, plus one project with the deliverable and where it ran
Brand systems and style guidesThe line between someone who makes assets and someone who maintains a brandOwnership bullet: the system you built or maintained and who used it
Print production (bleed, CMYK, prepress, packaging dielines)Print and packaging teams screen hard on this and juniors often lack itTools or ownership bullet, with the print work you took to press
Design systems and component librariesProduct design roles treat this as the core skillOwnership bullet with the library, the components and the teams consuming it
Working to brief and feedback roundsDesign managers hire for how you take direction as much as for tasteCollaboration bullet: who you worked with and how revisions ran
Accessibility and contrast standardsNow a real requirement on digital and public-sector workOne clause in a digital project bullet, only if you actually applied it

The portfolio link (the part designers get wrong)

Full URL, contact line, hyperlinked, tested in the exported PDF. Four rules, and most applications break at least one.

  • Write it out. yourname.com, not "portfolio available on request" and not a bare "Portfolio" word with a hidden link. Reviewers copy URLs into a browser as often as they click them.
  • Test the export. Open the finished PDF and click the link. Links that survive in the design file and die in the export are the single most common self-inflicted wound on a design application.
  • Password goes on the resume. If your site is gated for client confidentiality, put the password right next to the URL. A reviewer will not email you for it.
  • Curate to the job. Six to ten pieces, strongest first, with the brief and your actual role stated on each. If a piece was a team effort, say what you did on it, because a creative director will ask in the interview either way.

One more thing on layout, since it is the whole reason this page exists. Keep the submitted resume plain text in a single column, with no text inside images, no icon skill bars and no sidebar. If you want a designed version, make it the cover page of the portfolio PDF instead. The ATS-friendly formatting guide covers exactly which elements break parsing.

Build yours

  1. Step 1, curate the portfolio first. The resume is written to point at it, so decide which six to ten pieces you are showing before you write a line. Cut anything you would not want to be asked about.
  2. Step 2, mirror the posting's tools exactly. If it says Figma, write Figma. If it says packaging and prepress, those words need to be on your page. Paste your draft and the posting into the free ATS match check to see the gaps, in about 30 seconds and at no cost.
  3. Step 3, lay it out in the builder. Single column, real text, portfolio link live in the exported PDF, which is precisely what a designed resume tends to lose. The AI resume builder drafts the ownership bullets from your titles and projects so you edit rather than start blank. No signup needed.
  4. Step 4, send the plain resume and let the portfolio do the rest. If the application allows a second file, that is where a designed version or a case-study PDF goes.
