Resume for Nursing Student: What Goes on It Before You Graduate
While you are still enrolled, your resume is built on three things: your expected graduation date, the clinical hours you have finished so far, and any healthcare job or certification you can get during the program. There is no license line yet, and that is fine. Two complete examples and a blank template are below.

Who actually reads a nursing student resume
Not a residency recruiter. Usually an externship coordinator, a unit manager hiring student techs, or a scholarship committee. Each of them wants a different top line, and all three want your graduation date immediately.
- Summer externships and nurse intern programs. They screen on year in the program, rotations finished, and current BLS. Lead with your objective line naming the program.
- Student nurse tech, patient care tech and CNA jobs. They screen on certification, availability and hands-on care. Move your work and certification sections above clinicals.
- Scholarships and honour societies. They screen on GPA, leadership and volunteering. Keep those sections real rather than padded.
Finished the program already? You have moved a rung up the ladder: go to the new grad nurse resume guide. Already licensed and working a unit? The resume for nurses page is written for you.
What belongs on the page while you are enrolled
Seven credential lines. The last column tells you when to leave one out rather than fake it.
| Credential line | How to write it as a student | When to leave it out |
|---|---|---|
| Expected graduation | "BSN expected 05/2027" on the line under your name, never just "nursing student" | Never skip it. The date is how an externship coordinator sorts applicants into cohorts |
| Clinical hours to date | A running total in the objective, then hours per completed rotation | Skip the total only if you have not started clinicals, and list coursework instead |
| BLS | Full name, issuer and expiry date, near the top | Never skip it. Most student-facing hospital roles will not interview without current BLS |
| CNA, PCT, EMT or phlebotomy | Certification name, state registry number, and current status | Skip if you hold none, and put the course you are enrolled in with its completion date instead |
| Health clearances | One line: immunizations, TB clearance and HIPAA training current | Skip only if your school has not completed them yet, because hospitals verify these before a start date |
| EHR you have charted in | Epic, Cerner, Meditech or PointClickCare by name, from clinicals or a CNA job | Skip if you have only observed. Do not claim a system you have not documented in |
| Coursework completed | Named courses: Health Assessment, Pharmacology, Med-Surg, Maternal-Newborn | Skip once you have three or more rotations to list, because rotations outrank coursework |
Education and certifications sit above work history automatically. No signup needed to start.
Clinical hours and coursework when you have barely started
Two rotations in, you list two rotations, with hours, and you are done apologizing for it. Nobody expects an ICU history from someone in Pharmacology II. Give each finished rotation the site, the unit, the hours and one line on what you performed under supervision, then mark the one you are in right now as in progress with the semester.
Before your first placement, named coursework does the same job. "Health Assessment, Pharmacology I and II, Microbiology" is checkable and specific. "Nursing courses" is not. Once you have three or more rotations, cut the coursework list, because rotations always outrank it.
Hospital volunteering counts too, and it counts more when you write what you handled rather than where you stood: patients transported, supplies restocked, families directed, hours logged.
Example 1: third-year BSN student applying for a summer externship
Three rotations done, a CNA job on a memory care unit, and a student association role. This is the strongest position a student resume gets into.

Blank nursing student resume template
Copy this, fill in the brackets, and delete anything you cannot honestly complete yet. The headings are written so a hospital portal finds each block.
One page, single column, no photo, no skill bars. Move the healthcare work block above clinicals when you are applying to a tech or CNA job rather than an externship.
Build yours in three steps
- Step 1, open your clinical log and your transcript together. You need hours per rotation, site and unit names, the exact titles of finished courses, and your certification expiry dates. That is the part nothing can do for you.
- Step 2, build the resume. Paste your notes and the externship posting. Education and certifications land above work history, and the wording follows the posting. No signup needed with no signup.
- Step 3, run it against the posting. Paste both into the free ATS match check, which names the terms you are missing. Add the ones that are true for you, then send it. Save the file, because you will update this same page every semester.
