Resume for Retail Jobs: Format, Template and Examples
A retail resume is a selling document: percent to target, units per transaction, loyalty attach, merchandising and shrink, with availability at the top. Duties like greeted customers separate you from nobody. This page gives you the keyword table, two worked examples and a blank template.

What a retail resume has to prove
That product moved while you were on the floor, and that the store ran properly around you. Those are the two halves of the job, and most retail resumes describe neither.
The default page lists duties: greeted customers, operated the till, kept the shop floor tidy, assisted with stock. Every applicant wrote those four lines, so the manager reading a pile of them has nothing to sort on.
What sorts the pile is a number attached to selling, plus evidence you did the quiet work too: the resets, the replenishment, the counts, the closing routine. Hit target on a Saturday, merchandise the wall properly on a Tuesday morning.
Retail, cashier or customer service, which page you need
Three different jobs, three different resumes. Pick the right one before you write.
- Sales floor retail, this page. Sales associate, retail associate, stock associate, merchandiser, keyholder, department or shift supervisor. Your resume sells on target, basket size, merchandising and shrink.
- Register and checkout, the resume for a cashier. Front end and checkout roles where the page is built on POS systems, transactions per shift and drawer accuracy.
- Support and contact center, the resume for customer service. Phone, email and chat support, complaint handling, ticket volume and resolution times.
- Commission and quota selling, the resume for a salesperson. Where the page leads with quota attainment rather than shift coverage.
- Stockroom, receiving and fulfillment, the resume for warehouse jobs. Pick rates, forklift certification and safety record instead of floor sales.
If your job covered two of these, write the page for the job you want next and mention the other in one line. A cashier applying for a sales associate role should lead with selling, not with drawer accuracy.
Retail resume keywords worth having on the page
Seven groups. Use the ones that are true for you, in the words the job ad uses.
| Group | What to name | Why it gets scanned |
|---|---|---|
| Selling | Percent to target, personal sales total, conversion rate, ranked position on the team | The store is measured on sales, so this is the first thing read |
| Basket | Units per transaction, average sale or average transaction value, multiple sales, add-ons | Shows you sell rather than just serve |
| Attach | Loyalty signups, store card applications, protection plans, warranties, subscriptions | Head office targets these separately from sales |
| Merchandising | Planogram sets, visual merchandising, window changes, seasonal resets, markdowns, replenishment | The half of the job that happens when the store is quiet |
| Loss prevention | Shrink percentage, stock counts, fitting room controls, refund and till procedure, security tagging | Shrink is a manager level number, and few applicants mention it |
| Responsibility | Keyholder, opening and closing, cash office and banking, shift cover, training new starters | The bridge from associate to supervisor |
| Availability | Evenings, weekends, holiday trading, seasonal peak, open availability | Retail rotas decide a lot of hires |

Seasonal work, shrink and the step up to keyholder
Three things that decide whether a retail resume reads as junior or ready.
- Label seasonal work as seasonal. Write the season and the year so the short dates explain themselves, and say what the trading period was: holiday, back to school, a sale, a store opening. Being asked back for a second season is a hiring signal in its own right, so say that plainly rather than listing the same store twice and hoping the reader notices.
- Put a real line about shrink or loss prevention on the page. Department shrink figures, stock count results, fitting room controls, refund and till procedure, or completed training. Shrink is a number every store manager answers for, and almost no associate mentions it, so one honest line here is unusually strong.
- Make the keyholder step obvious. If you already open, close, bank the takings, run a shift when the manager is off, or train starters, those belong in their own bullet with the scale attached: staff on the floor, store size, takings handled. Promotion on paper is about showing the leap is small.
One more, and it is the most common miss. Availability sits at the top of the page, not the bottom. Retail is scheduled around cover, and honest evening, weekend and holiday availability will beat a slightly stronger candidate who can only work Tuesdays.
Build yours
- Step 1, dig out your numbers. Percent to target, average sale, units per transaction, loyalty and card signups, shrink, team ranking, staff trained, planogram resets. If your store shared a weekly report, that is where they are.
- Step 2, write the availability line first. Days, evenings, weekends, holiday trading. Only what you will genuinely work.
- Step 3, match the posting. Paste the ad and your draft into the free ATS match check to see what is missing, in about 30 seconds and at no cost. Big chains screen with software before a manager sees anything.
- Step 4, lay it out in the builder. It handles the single-column, ATS-safe formatting and exports a clean PDF in about five minutes. The AI resume builder turns your figures into bullets so you are editing rather than starting cold. No signup needed.
