Resume for a Stay at Home Parent Returning to Work
A resume for a stay at home parent keeps every date visible, names the career break once in the summary, and puts freelance, volunteer and certification work from the break in a Recent Experience block above your older jobs. Parenting is not written as a job title. This page gives you the format, two worked examples and a blank template to copy.

Which format to use after a parenting break
Reverse chronological, with a Recent Experience block added. Not functional, not a skills-only page, not a two column design.
The common advice is to switch to a functional resume so the dates disappear. That advice is out of date. Applicant tracking software reads employer names and date ranges to build your history, and a page without them scores badly before a human opens it.
So keep the timeline. Then add one block, sitting between your summary and your old jobs, for everything you did during the break that a hiring manager would count: freelance work, a committee role, a business, a course you finished. That block is what turns a blank stretch of years into a page with something on it.
If you want the phrasing side of this in more depth, including summary lines by gap length and how to turn day to day parenting responsibility into hirable wording, read the stay at home mom resume guide. This page is the template and the build.
What counts as experience, and where it goes
Six things people leave off, and the section each one belongs in.
| What you did | Where it goes | Words to include |
|---|---|---|
| Freelance or contract work | Recent Experience, as a real job entry | Client count, projects delivered, invoiced revenue, the software you used |
| Volunteer or committee role | Recent Experience, with the title you actually held | Treasurer, secretary, chair, coordinator, budget figure, volunteers directed |
| A course or certification | Recent Experience or its own Certifications line | The awarding body and the year, not just the subject |
| A small business or side income | Recent Experience, as self-employed | Trading years, customers served, platforms used, revenue if you are happy to state it |
| Keeping a professional license current | Certifications, near the top | License name, number if it is public, renewal or expiry date |
| Your pre-break career | Prior Professional Experience, in date order | The job titles and systems the new posting names, in the same words it uses |

Naming the break without apologizing for it
One sentence, in the summary, and then you move on. Three rules make that sentence work:
- Say the length and the direction. "Returning to bookkeeping after a six year career break to raise my children" tells the reader what happened and what you want. That is all the sentence has to do.
- Attach one piece of evidence. A certification, a freelance client count, a committee role. The evidence is what stops the sentence sounding like an excuse, because it shows the break was not empty.
- Do not dress it up. No invented job title for parenting, no "managed a household of five", no apology. Recruiters have seen the Domestic CEO line and it does not land. Real responsibility with a real organization behind it does.
Leaving the break unmentioned is worse than naming it. The reader spots the missing years in about two seconds and then spends the rest of the page wondering.
If the break was not only about children, or it overlapped with a layoff or a health period, our guides on explaining a resume gap from a layoff and explaining an employment gap for mental health cover the wording for those cases.
Build yours
- Step 1, list everything from the break before you judge it. Freelance jobs, committee roles, the business you ran from the kitchen table, courses you finished, the license you kept current. Write it all down first. Most people cut too much at this stage and end up with an empty middle.
- Step 2, put a number on two or three of them. Clients, volunteers, budget, events, orders a month. A number is what makes an unpaid role read as work.
- Step 3, match the posting. Paste the job ad and your draft into the free ATS match check to see which words are missing. It takes about 30 seconds and costs nothing.
- Step 4, lay it out in the builder. It handles the single-column, ATS-safe formatting and exports a clean PDF in about five minutes. The AI resume builder drafts the bullets from your notes so you are editing rather than staring at a blank page. No signup needed.
