Resume for Teacher Assistant: What Districts Shortlist
A teacher assistant resume leads with your paraprofessional credential and clearances, then proves classroom support with numbers: students on your caseload, how many have IEPs, group size for small-group instruction, and the data you collect. Two complete examples and a blank template are below.

A paraprofessional resume is not a teacher resume
The reader is the same principal, and the first section is completely different. A teacher is hired on a state license and the grades and subjects it covers. An aide is hired on a paraprofessional credential, clean clearances, and evidence of support delivered under someone else's plan.
That changes what goes in the top third. License and endorsements come off. Credential route, background check and fingerprint status, CPR and behavior training go on. Then your experience stops describing lessons you designed and starts describing the caseload you supported, the accommodations you implemented and the data you handed to the case manager.
Which page you want: this one if your title is teacher assistant, paraprofessional, instructional aide, classroom aide, para educator or one-to-one aide. Use the resume for teachers page if you hold or are finishing a state teaching license and are applying to run your own classroom.
Seven things a district screen looks for
Open your draft and check it against this. The right-hand column is why each one is there.
| On your resume | Write it like this | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Para credential | Your state paraprofessional credential, ParaPro or state assessment score, associate degree, or completed college credit hours | Federal Title I rules set a baseline and states and districts add to it, so name whichever route you qualified by |
| Setting and grade band | General education, inclusion, resource, or self-contained, plus the grades: K to 2, 3 to 5, middle, high | A self-contained aide and a general education aide do different jobs, and the posting names one |
| IEP and 504 support | How many students on your caseload have IEPs, and which accommodations you actually implement | This is the phrase special education postings search for first |
| Small-group instruction | Subject, group size, and how often: reading intervention, groups of 4, five mornings a week | Group size and frequency turn a duty into evidence |
| Behavior support | Behavior intervention plan, de-escalation, and the training behind it: CPI, Safety-Care, Mandt, PBIS | Districts hiring for behavior support will not shortlist a resume with no training named |
| Data collection | What data you take, how often, and who receives it for IEP or progress-monitoring review | Most aide resumes leave this out entirely, and it is the clearest sign you know the job |
| Clearances | Background check and fingerprint status, TB clearance, mandated reporter and CPR training with dates | Districts cannot schedule a start date until these clear, so state where yours stand |

Turning classroom duties into support bullets
Every aide "helped students". The bullet only works when it names the setting, the number and the plan you were following. Three rewrites:
- Weak: Helped students with reading. Strong: Deliver small-group reading intervention to groups of 4, five mornings a week, using the program and pacing set by the classroom teacher.
- Weak: Worked with special needs students. Strong: Support 8 students with IEPs inside a 24-student inclusion classroom, implementing accommodations for extended time, chunked directions and preferential seating.
- Weak: Managed behavior issues. Strong: Run 1:1 support for two students on behavior intervention plans, including scheduled breaks and de-escalation using CPI techniques, and log frequency data on three target behaviors daily.
Notice what the strong versions never claim. You did not write the IEP, design the intervention or own the class. You implemented, supported and recorded, which is exactly the job. Keep the unglamorous work on the page too: bus duty, lunch and recess supervision, testing accommodations, prepping adapted materials, translating for families.

Copy this, replace the brackets, and delete any line you cannot honestly fill. Keep the headings as written so district portals find each block.
One page, single column, no photo, no columns. Use the exact job title from the posting in your header line, since districts use aide, paraprofessional and para educator differently.
Build yours in three steps
- Step 1, write down your numbers first. Class size, caseload, how many students have IEPs, group sizes and how often you run them, target behaviors you track, and every clearance with its date.
- Step 2, build the resume. Paste your notes and the district posting. Credentials sit above your work history, the bullets get written around support delivered, and the wording follows the posting. No signup needed with no signup.
- Step 3, match it to the posting. Paste your resume and the job description into the free ATS match check. It names the missing terms, usually a setting word or a training acronym. Add only what is true, then apply. Need help with the skills line? See the resume skills guide.
