Resume for Editors: The Format Hiring Editors Expect
An editor resume names the level of edit you do, the style guide you work in, and the volume you handle. Copyediting, line editing, developmental and proofreading are four different jobs, and a hiring editor screens on which one you can take unsupervised. This page gives you the keyword table, two full examples and a blank template.

What an editor resume has to prove
That you can be handed a manuscript or a queue and trusted to work at a named level, in a named style, without supervision. That is the entire hiring question, and most editor resumes never answer it.
The common failure is describing the craft to people who already know it. "Reviewed content for grammar and clarity" tells a managing editor nothing, because that sentence is true of every person in the stack. What tells them something is that you copyedit 40,000 words a week in Chicago style across two subject desks, query authors directly, and have never missed a print close.
So the page carries three specifics on every job: level of edit, style guide, volume. Everything else is supporting detail.
What hiring editors and ATS scan for
Editorial jobs at publishers, agencies and in-house content teams get filtered by keyword before a human reads. These are the terms that carry weight, and where each one belongs.
| Term or skill | Why they scan for it | Where to put it |
|---|---|---|
| Style guides (AP, Chicago, APA, AMA) | The first hard filter. Newsrooms run AP, book and long-form run Chicago, journals run APA or AMA | Own section plus one mention in your summary. Say if you maintained a house style sheet |
| Level of edit (copy, line, developmental, proofread) | Tells a hiring editor what work you can actually take on, and what rate band you sit in | Name the level in every job bullet, not just once at the top |
| Volume (words or pieces per week) | The closest thing editing has to a production number, and most editor resumes leave it out | First bullet of each job: "40,000 words a week across 3 subject desks" |
| Track Changes, Google Docs suggesting mode, InCopy | Confirms you can work in the file the team already works in, with no training time | Tools section, named plainly. Add InDesign only if you actually lay out pages |
| CMS names (WordPress, Contentful, Arc, Drupal) | Digital desks screen for the system they publish in | Tools section, and mirror the exact CMS the job posting names |
| Fact-checking and sourcing | Separates a proofreader from an editor a publication can trust with a risky piece | Process bullet: primary-source checking, legal read, corrections handling |
| SEO and headline writing | Standard on brand and digital editorial jobs, and often the reason a role exists | Process bullet with the tool named, plus a result you can check in analytics |
| Author and freelancer management | The line between an editor and a senior editor is who you direct | Give the number of writers or freelancers and whether you commissioned |
| Editorial training (ACES, Poynter, EFA) | Credible third-party training, useful when your degree is not in journalism or English | Education section with body and year. No expired or unfinished courses |

Writing the bullets (the part editors get wrong)
Four lines per job, in this order. They answer the four things a hiring editor needs to know before an interview is worth booking:
- Volume. Words or pieces per week, and the subject areas. This is your throughput, and it is the number almost every editor resume omits. A desk hiring for a queue of 30 articles a week needs to know you have carried that load.
- Level of edit. Copyedit, line edit, developmental, proofread, plus the style guide. Say which, per job. This is the single most useful phrase on the page and it costs you four words.
- Process. What you owned end to end: author queries, fact-check, legal read, SEO brief, print close, freelancer briefs. Ownership is what distinguishes an editor from a second reader.
- Result. Something checkable in your own records. A style sheet you wrote, a backlog you cleared, a correction rate you tracked, a turnaround you shortened. If you cannot verify it, write the claim without a number rather than inventing one.
Two things that catch editors out. First, do not list every publication you have touched as a freelancer, pick the five that match the job and put the rest under a short selected work line. Second, mirror the posting's own vocabulary: if it says "copy editor" do not call yourself a "content quality specialist", because the filter and the human are both looking for the plain title. The keyword extraction guide shows how to pull those terms in a couple of minutes.
Build yours
- Step 1, collect your numbers first. Words or pieces per week per job, freelancers managed, titles handled, style sheets you wrote, turnaround times. Fifteen minutes in your old calendars and CMS dashboard makes the rest of the page write itself.
- Step 2, match the posting. If it names Chicago, a CMS or a level of edit, those exact words need to be on your page. Paste your draft and the posting into the free ATS match check to see what is missing, in about 30 seconds and at no cost.
- Step 3, lay it out in the builder. It handles the single-column, ATS-safe formatting and exports a clean PDF in about five minutes, with the clips link live in the file. The AI resume builder drafts the bullets from your titles and your volumes so you edit rather than start blank, which is the part editors are fast at anyway. No signup needed.
- Step 4, expect a sample edit. Most editorial hiring includes a timed test on a real piece. Read the posting for the style guide before you sit it, and query rather than silently rewrite.
